How to approach infrastructure automation – The Enterprisers Project
Standardization and automation are certainly not new concepts in IT. So why is infrastructure automation such a hot topic right now?
The short answer: Containers, orchestration, and other modern technologies have enabled an evolution of infrastructure automation capabilities that, among other benefits, let standardization actually be enforced.
“One can argue that, prior to containers, the standardization of infrastructure and its automation was something of a band-aid,” Red Hat technology evangelist Gordon Haff explains. “Sure, we had standard operating environments (SOEs) and configuration management tooling that automated the provisioning of those SOEs and their ongoing monitoring. But there were still a lot of ‘snowflake’ servers needed for particular tasks, and deployed images could still drift over time even if configuration management software tried to keep them in compliance.”
With containers and immutable infrastructure, deployed instances can’t drift. So infrastructure automation isn’t new. But many of the ways we go about doing it today are.
That took some wind out of the proverbial sails in a long-running pursuit of effective infrastructure automation. Containerization and orchestration have reinvigorated the journey.
“With containers and immutable infrastructure that changed – now deployed instances couldn’t drift,” Haff says. So, no: “Infrastructure automation isn’t new. But many of the ways we go about doing it today are.”

IT careers 2021: 7 hot technology and core skills – The Enterprisers Project
Given the perpetual churn of technology, it’s critical for IT pros to keep their capabilities and skills current. That’s especially true this year, as organizations lean heavily on IT as they transform the business amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“While historically IT was focused on cost and stability, today business value is derived from agility, customer-centricity, and velocity,” says Keith Sims, president of Integrity Resource Management and a member of executive recruiting network Sanford Rose Associates. IT leaders in 2021 are aligning their digital goals and operational activities with the strategy and vision of their CEOs.
“IT is helping get products and product bundles to market faster, creating and tracking successful pricing models, taking data the company has been sitting on and turning it into new revenue streams, and utilizing collaboration tools to become co-innovators with their customers, actually developing products their customers already want to buy,” Sims says.
In the year ahead, attention will also turn to the post-pandemic future. “It seems that many companies will pivot from a focused COVID-19 response to their long-term product roadmaps, particularly with regard to apps and services,” says Art Zeile, CEO of DHI Group, the parent company of technology jobs website Dice. Thus, project management, software development and engineering, and data-related proficiencies will be paramount.

Medium acquires Glose, a social ebook platform – SlashGear
Online publishing platform Medium has acquired Glose, a Paris-based online ebook store that includes some robust social features. The company announced the business deal on Friday, stating that it will integrate Glose with its platform to bring more than 1.5 million ebooks — and the related Glose features — to its users.
Glose is an ebook platform with a twist — you can purchase ebooks on the platform and use the same platform to access various tools and social functions that improve the experience, including getting rewards for reading, a streak count for monitoring how many days in a row you read, and the ability to share annotations with other users.
The platform is home to books from major publishing houses, including Hachette, Penguin Random House, and Simon & Schuster. Medium, meanwhile, is a blog-like platform where anyone can create a profile and publish their own articles, including everything from long investigate pieces to small op-eds.
In its announcement, Medium indicated that the Glose platform will be integrated with its own publishing site, but it’s unclear at this time what that integration will look like. Perhaps we’ll see some of Glose’s social and tracking features arrive on the Medium platform itself, but remains to be seen.
In a statement, Medium CEO Ev William said:
Books are a means of exploring an idea, a way to go deeper. The vast majority of

Medium has just purchased ebook company Glose – Goodereader
Glose has been in operation since 2014 and they sell digital audiobooks and ebooks. They carry content from all of the major publishers, including Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Hachette, and Simon & Schuster. The books can be edited and the notes and highlights can be shared with friends. More than 1 million people have used Glose and 25 universities have signed up to Glose Education, including Stanford and Columbia University. Glose also provides hundreds of thousands of public domain books for free.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Medium supports a wide range of publishing, from short blog posts to in-depth investigative journalism, and everything in between. With the integration of Glose, Medium will have more than 1.5 million books available within its vibrant ecosystem. Readers will be able to find more of what they are looking for by an author or on a subject, and writers can have their different content forms all in one place, elevating their voice and perspective.
I think Medium bought the company so they can recommend audiobooks or ebooks by authors who write on their platform. Once the Glose library is eventually hosted by Medium, it will be a one stop shop for journalism and also selling digital content, so you can read for free, and also buy an ebook by an author you like, without having to leave Medium and being diverted to other websites. Glose will continue to run their business as

With 3 Short Words, the CEO of Delta Air Lines Just Taught a Leadership Masterclass – Inc.
Delta Air Lines held its latest earnings call last week. The transcript ran 14,000 words, but three words in particular leapt out: optimism, hope, and confidence.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian and his leadership kept repeating them, and I think that probably tells you something about the leadership message they came into the call intending to impart.
This kind of takeaway is typical of the business lessons that led to my free ebook, Flying Business Class: 12 Rules for Leaders From the U.S. Airlines. It’s also why I advise leaders of businesses of all sizes and in all industries to pay attention to what Delta and the other big airlines do.
This has been perhaps the most challenging time in the history of U.S. aviation.
Bastian himself called it “the toughest year in Delta’s history,” at the start of the earnings call, as he revealed that Delta lost $2.1 billion in the final quarter of 2020, and $9 billion for the entire year.
And while Delta avoided the massive furloughs that some of its competitors had to endure, most outside observers are nowhere near as optimistic as Bastian professed to be about the medium-term future of the industry.
Heck, I was struck just a few months ago when Scott Kirby, the CEO of United Airlines, quoted Winston Churchill in the middle of World War II, opining that the appropriate amount of optimism to summon was simply to say that

Want to Lead ‘Gen Z?’ Tom Brady Just Taught a Masterclass In How to Do It Right – Inc.
When quarterbacks Tom Brady and Drew Brees take the field in their playoff game Sunday, they’ll have four decades worth of NFL seasons between them.
That’s a lot of experience, and it’s the kind of thing that I cover in my free ebook, Tom Brady Always Wins: 10 Success Lessons From the GOAT. But as much as football fans have been talking about their age and longevity in the league, I recently noticed something striking about Brady’s leadership style.
It’s about how he leads players who are much younger than he is–even players who aren’t on his team, and from an entirely different generation.
Let’s set the stage. Last week, Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Washington Football Team, which set up their match this weekend against Brees and the New Orleans Saints.
Among the storylines last week was rookie Chase Young, Washington’s 6-foot-5, 264-pound defensive end, and his attempt, all game long, to try to catch and clobber Brady.
In the days leading up to that contest, Young kept calling out Brady in the media: “Tom Brady, I’m coming!” he was quoted as saying. “I want Tom! I want Tom!”
There are three quick things to know about the game, even if you could hardly care less about the NFL.
First, Young is young. Pure Gen Z, 21 years old.
Brady, on the other hand is 43; squarely in the demographics of Generation X. In fact, on
